The Project

Downtown Red Deer is a place in transition. There are vacant lots throughout the downtown, spaces waiting to be filled with new development. Growing Community aims to green up the downtown, planting food gardens in vacant lots to engage downtown residents, clients of social services and businesses in growing food for the community.

Benefits of the project are numerous: - Create relationships between various people and groups in the downtown - Help relieve vandalism and theft - Promote positive activities that help mental health - Attract visitors to the downtown - Encourage the addition of new residents - Develop a collaboration between downtown business owners and social services persons, who oversee the planting, maintenance and harvesting of gardens.
